Hiding details evokes criticism in J&K

first_imgThe authorities have decided not to publicise the details of candidates contesting in elections to urban local bodies in volatile pockets in the Kashmir valley “due to security reasons,” evoking sharp reactions from political parties.“Lack of transparency will only bring disrepute to the institution of democracy. It seems former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s legacy is being reversed. Mr. Vaypayee, as prime minister, ensured fair elections in J&K and allowed peoples’ representatives to come up. This saw a new hope emerging among people, who started looking up to elections as a credible exercise. In the process, mainstream political parties, too, gained an important space despite Kashmir’s complex situation,” senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Nayeem Akhtar told The Hindu. He described the situation in J&K as “worse than the 1990s.” “It’s getting worse than 1990s, with non-locals being fielded as candidates in many wards. They may have visited the area for the first time on the day of the nominations. The way the elections are held goes against tenets of democracy,” said Mr. Akhtar. All major regional parties, including the PDP and the National Conference, have decided to boycott polls, leaving the Jammu & Kashmir People’s Conference (J&KPC), the Congress and the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) as major players in the fray. “The credibility of the poll process has been badly affected. No candidate has filed a nomination in 177 wards. In 215 wards, candidates have been declared [elected] unopposed. It speaks volumes about the power-thirsty BJP imposing [on the] elections. What will be the credibility of these polls, when even finding a candidate to contest has become difficult?” asked Congress vice president and MLC G.N. Monga .Details concealed Contrary to J&K Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabra’s directive to returning officers “to paste details of contesting candidates on notice boards”, scores of wards in south and north Kashmir have decided against it. “Candidates have pleaded with us that their lives will be in danger in case their details are made public. In many wards, we decided against publicising it,” a south Kashmir-based official told The Hindu. In the wake of militant threats, several independent candidates on Thursday held a press conference in Srinagar. They claimed they were “not getting any response from the government over security. The property of two candidates have been attacked by unknown men in the past 24 hours in the Valley with petrol bombs.”However, Additional Director General Police-Law and Order (ADGP) Muneer Ahmad Khan said many contestants have been put up in hired hotels, guarded by heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces. About 3,000 candidates are in the fray across J&K for elections to 1,145 wards across 79 municipal bodies, starting October 8.last_img read more

Vectorborne diseases NDMC holds interactive session with school children

first_imgNew Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council Secretary (NDMC), Rashmi Singh on Tuesday said that school children pay a vital role in the fight against the spread of vector-borne diseases. She said that children “are capable of convincing their near and dear ones about how to make their habitat neat and clean”. Inaugurating an interactive session organised for principals, nodal officers and school children on the containment of vector-borne diseases, Singh said that children are crucial to spread awareness about the dangers of unclean areas and advocate for an environment that is free of diseases like dengue, malaria and Chikungunya. Around 200 children from 75 government and private schools in the NDMC area had attended the interactive session at the municipality’s Convention Centre here. At the session, Singh told the audience that medicine is still a long way from finding a cure for a lot of vector-borne diseases and that prevention is the safest way to control these illnesses. “The problem of vector-borne diseases might not be solved alone by the NDMC or any other civic body but it should be a joint venture of each and every segment of society to get rid of the dread diseases,” she said.last_img read more

Police again focus of testimony at MMIWG inquiry – this time its

first_imgWillow Fiddler Kathleen Martens APTN News Clutching an eagle feather given to her during the search for her daughter, the mother of Delaine Copenace got right to the point.“I was so scared, really hurt now knowing where she was,” Anida Ross said on the opening day of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Thunder Bay.Copenace, an Ojibway teen from Onigaming First Nation, was 16 when she disappeared in Kenora, Ont. on February 28.But instead of rushing to find the missing teen, Ross testified provincial police compounded her anguish by suggesting Delaine was drinking somewhere.“It’s like they gave up on her. I was so angry and hurt,” Ross said, wiping away tears.Watch Willow Fiddler’s story from the inquiry here: Ross was the first witness to testify at the inquiry’s first stop in Ontario – its seventh and last hearing of 2017.An Elder gifted Ross the feather saying, ‘Think of it as your daughter’, Ross told commissioners Brian Eyolfson and Michele Audette.Police called off their search after 14 days.Ross said that was a difficult time made even tougher by the way some officers treated her.“You could tell which were sincere, which weren’t,” she said. “I knew just by the way they talked to me.”When officers told her they found a body in Lake of the Woods, Ross said they couldn’t confirm it was Delaine. That took until March 22.Finally, Ontario’s Office of the Chief Coroner ruled there was no foul play and said the teen drowned.Something Ross called “garbage” and still disagrees with.A regional coroner later overturned the decision so the case remains open.“Proper investigations have to happen,” said Ross, adding she couldn’t believe the report was sent to her home via regular mail.“Just ‘cause they’re dead and gone don’t give up on it.”Ross is still upset it took police three days to join the search for Delaine. She said she thinks her daughter was harmed.“I believe that was the second scene; she might have died elsewhere.”The family doesn’t have the police report, although Ross says she requested it.They took pictures of Delaine’s wrists with a cell phone because it looked like they’d been bound together, she said. For her, there are still too many unanswered questions. And police saying she “just ran away” doesn’t cut it.Commissioners are expecting to hear more about high-profile drowning deaths right in Thunder Bay as 50 families testify over three days in the northwestern Ontario city.Follow Willow Fiddler at the inquiry:last_img read more

JAMAICA MOU signed to further boost Child Protection Services

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Jamaica, November 21, 2017 – Kingston – The Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further improve the quality of services offered to vulnerable children and families. The two-year MOU entails the establishment of a referral system that facilitates social interventions for persons who are assessed and determined to be vulnerable.   They include current and former wards of the State; children remanded in government places of safety, pending court decisions; youngsters deemed at risk to be or who have been neglected, abused or maltreated by their families; and those on the Programme of Advancement through Health and Education (PATH).The MOU was signed during a ceremony at CPFSA’s head office on Duke Street, Kingston, on November 17.   Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Collette Roberts-Risden, said the MOU will support the CPFSA’s delivery of much-needed assistance to the target beneficiaries.“What we hope to achieve… is that any child in need of support, we will refer them to the CPFSA, and, similarly, any child in need of the programmes in our Ministry, the CPFSA will refer them to us,” she said.Meanwhile, CPFSA Chief Executive Officer, Rosalee Gage-Grey, said the partnership will assist in strengthening the family structure.“We can’t treat with children without treating with their families; and we believe that if we give greater support to our families, then the children will be OK.   As we seek to build the family structure in our country, we want to ensure that the most vulnerable who, we both serve, are protected and provided with services in a timely manner.   We see this partnership as very valuable,” she said. The CPFSA, formerly the Child Development Agency (CDA), is the entity under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information that is responsible for enabling a stable and nurturing living environment for children who are in need of care and protection. The Agency was renamed following its merger with the Office of the Children’s Registry earlier this year. This was done as part of the Ministry’s plans to create a more efficient child-protection sector with emphasis on the pooling of resources, timely service delivery, and increasing field services staff.Release: JIS Related Items:last_img read more

In its September issue, Marie Claire offered a “Shop the Ads” program that leveraged services from advertising technology company Pongr that lets consumers use mobile cameras to share images of designated products across social networks as well as request information on the product from the brand as well as contact editors. The promotion-which grew from an editorial program called “Shop the Shoot”-didn’t use bar codes, apps or required consumers to have a smartphone. Twenty-seven pages in Marie Claire’s September issue were designated for the program, featuring more than 200 products from brands such as Armani. Dutch expel Turkish minister as police break up protests

first_imgPolice break up protests that erupted after Dutch authorities barred Turkish ministers from visiting in Rotterdam. Photo: AFPDutch police used water cannon and horses early Sunday to break up protests outside the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam as the city expelled a Turkish minister, amid an escalating diplomatic row with Ankara. After several hours of calm demonstrations, police moved in to disperse over 1,000 people gathered close to the consulate, charging the crowd on horseback and using dogs to regain control.Protestors hit back, throwing rocks at riot police, while hundreds of cars jammed the streets blaring their horns and revving their engines.Tensions finally tipped over into violence after a day of fast-moving events, triggered when Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said he planned to attend a pro-Turkish government rally in Rotterdam. The Netherlands, which holds general elections on Wednesday, had repeatedly said Cavusoglu was not welcome to campaign for Turkey’s April referendum in the country and refused his plane permission to land.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted angrily accusing the Dutch—who were once under Nazi occupation—of being “the vestiges of Nazis.”The Dutch decision to ban Cavusoglu from visiting came after Germany and other European nations also blocked similar campaign events.“They are the vestiges of the Nazis, they are fascists,” Erdogan told an Istanbul rally on Saturday, days after he angrily compared moves to block rallies in Germany to “Nazi practices”.“Ban our foreign minister from flying however much you like, but from now on let’s see how your flights will land in Turkey,” Erdogan said.Minister expelledBut later, Turkey’s Family Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya appeared at the scene after reportedly travelling by car overland from Germany. She was stopped just outside the consulate by Dutch police, and after several hours of negotiations escorted back to the German border.Kaya was “on the way from Rotterdam to Germany,” mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb told reporters, adding: “She has been expelled back to the country she came from.”After several hours of negotiations, it had proven “impossible to find a solution,” he said, adding Ankara had been repeatedly told she was “not welcome. But nevertheless she decided to travel”.Kaya complained of her treatment, and could be seen in images on Dutch NOS television appearing to argue with Dutch police about the situation.“We’ve been here for about four hours. We were not even offered water,” she told the NTV television channel.“I was told to leave the country and return to Germany as soon as possible,” she added.Cavusoglu meanwhile flew to France where he is expected to address a rally Sunday in the eastern city of Metz. A French official said the visit had been cleared by the foreign ministry in Paris. As the row raged, Turkish foreign ministry sources said the Dutch embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul had both been sealed off for “security reasons”.Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Erdogan’s criticism was “crazy.”“I understand that they are angry but this is way out of line,” he said. “I really think we made the right decision here.”‘Don’t return’Cavusoglu, speaking in Istanbul, said the ban was “unacceptable”.“Why are you taking sides in the referendum?” he said, adding: “Is the foreign minister of Turkey a terrorist?”The Turkish foreign ministry said the Dutch charge d’affaires in Ankara was summoned and told Turkey did not want the Dutch ambassador—currently on holiday—to return “for a while”.The Netherlands is home to some 400,000 people of Turkish origin, and Ankara is keen to harness votes of the diaspora in Europe ahead of the April 16 referendum on creating an executive presidency. The Turkish government argues the changes would ensure stability and create more efficient governance, but opponents say it would lead to one-man rule and further inflame tensions in its diverse society. The latest row came after NATO allies Turkey and Germany sparred over the cancellation of a series of referendum campaign events there.Germany is home to 1.4 million people eligible to vote in Turkey—the fourth-largest electoral base after Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.Although Berlin insisted the cancellations by local authorities were for logistical reasons, Turkish officials repeatedly hit back.last_img read more
